The agency reported over 50,000 models with door issues and 80,000 have software glitches.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened a recall query into the Volkswagen electric ID.4 sport utility vehicles built between 2021 and 2023. The agency received 12 reports of the car’s electronic doors opening while driving, though no injuries or fatalities were reported as a result of this issue. This recall will affect around 51,500 vehicles released under these lines of electric SUVs.
The vehicles in this recall were also part of a previous query the agency opened into this same line of Volkswagen electric vehicles, which reviewed reports of water seepage through the doors into the interior of the vehicles. The NHTSA will open an additional query into whether its previous review successfully addressed this known issue.
NHTSA also reported a recall of nearly 80,000 of the ID.4 models for a potentially dangerous software issue. “Vehicles may experience center displays and instrument panel displays that do not boot, or that sporadically reset,“ the agency stated. “This can result in loss of speedometer information or loss of rearview camera image.“
